Why the face heals exceptionally well
The face has some of the richest blood supply in the entire body. A dense network of blood vessels and capillaries close to the skin surface means efficient delivery of immune cells and rapid lymphatic clearance of shattered pigment. This translates into relatively fast and effective healing between sessions.
This is particularly important because facial skin is thin — considerably thinner than on the torso. Thin skin heals differently from thick skin: it is more sensitive, but it also regenerates more quickly thanks to good circulation. In practice this means that removal results on the face can be very good, but achieving them requires greater care in calibrating treatment parameters.
The eye area — mandatory protective shields
Any tattoo near the eyes — under the eye, above the eye, at the corner, on the eyelid — requires the use of intraocular shields: metal or plastic lenses inserted under the eyelids to protect the eyeball from laser radiation. We do not perform any laser treatment in the eye area without these shields. It is an absolute safety standard.
Fitting the shields is a quick procedure performed by a specialist. Most patients describe it as uncomfortable but safe and fast. Once the shields are in place, the treatment proceeds as normal.
Brow-area tattoos are a separate category — they often overlap with permanent makeup and require an assessment of whether we are dealing with a decorative tattoo, PMU or microblading. Each case may call for a slightly different approach.
Conservative parameters — why we work more cautiously on the face
On the face we always apply a conservative approach: lower fluences, more sessions rather than an aggressive single treatment. The risk of a visible scar on the face is unacceptable — we would rather plan additional sessions than end up with a permanent effect on a visible area.
This does not mean the results are inferior — it means the path is safer and more controlled. High clearance rates are achievable on the face, but we reach them gradually and with full awareness at every step. More on how we minimise the risk of scarring in the guide on tattoo removal aftercare.
Types of facial tattoos
Decorative facial tattoos can be on the cheek, chin, forehead, temple, under the eye or around the mouth. Each location has its own nuances — skin varies in thickness and sensitivity to discomfort across the face. The area around the lips and mouth corners is among the more sensitive points.
Cosmetic tattoos — lip tattoo, eyeliner tattoo, brow line — form a separate category closer to permanent makeup. Pigments used in PMU differ in composition from decorative tattoo ink and may react differently to the laser. We assess each case individually.
“Quick, smooth and safe. During the treatment everything is explained step by step, with care for your comfort.”
Sessions and what to expect
With a conservative parameter approach the session count for facial tattoos may be higher than for a comparable tattoo on the arm. We work to a realistic baseline of 8–12 sessions or more, depending on the area, ink type and design density. Large or densely saturated tattoos may need additional sessions.
After each session the facial skin will be red and minor swelling may appear — a normal response. Detailed aftercare guidance is in the guide on tattoo removal aftercare, and a comprehensive overview of the whole process is in the guide on how to remove a tattoo.
