Why your body does the work between sessions
The laser doesn't "erase" the tattoo at once. It shatters the ink into tiny fragments, and only over the following weeks does your lymphatic system clear them. That's why the effect builds gradually and why sessions are spaced out — usually around 8 weeks. We cover the rhythm of treatments in our guide on how many sessions tattoo removal takes.
The takeaway is simple: the better your body works, the better the result. Sleep, hydration, movement and avoiding strain on the skin genuinely help. A healthy lifestyle is part of the treatment, not just good advice.
The first hours and days
Right after the treatment the skin can be red, warm and swollen, a bit like mild sunburn. That's normal. During this time:
- Cool the area as we instruct, to ease the heat.
- Keep it clean — wash gently with a mild cleanser, no rubbing.
- Cover the spot with a dressing for the first days if we advise it.
- Moisturise with the recommended product once the skin starts to heal.
Follow the instructions you're given at the visit — they take priority over general advice from the internet.
Blisters and scabs are normal
Some people develop blisters, small scabs or temporary lightening of the skin. That's a typical reaction to the treatment, not a complication. The key points:
- Don't pop blisters and don't pick at scabs — they protect the skin.
- Don't scratch or rub the area, even if it itches.
- Let the skin heal on its own — picking at scabs is the main cause of marks.
Resisting the urge to "help" the skin is what most reduces the risk of a mark after the treatment — we cover it separately: does tattoo removal leave scars.
What to avoid
The two main enemies of healing are sun and excess heat. While the skin heals, skip:
- Sun and tanning beds — tanned or freshly treated skin is harder and riskier to treat.
- Excess heat — sauna, hot baths, long showers, intense workouts right after the treatment.
- Swimming pools and soaking in the bath — soaking fresh skin invites infection.
- Irritating cosmetics and harsh exfoliants on the healing area.
Once the skin has healed, protect it with SPF — sun protection lowers the risk of pigment changes, especially between sessions.

Between sessions: what helps the result
Since it's the body that clears the ink, it's worth helping it day to day:
- Drink water and sleep well — good hydration and recovery support the clearing of ink fragments.
- Stay active — moderate exercise supports circulation and the lymphatic system.
- Avoid smoking — it slows healing and weakens the result.
- Protect the skin from the sun until your next session.
