Wrist skin characteristics
The skin at the wrist is relatively thin and prominent veins run just beneath the surface. This often prompts patients to ask whether the laser can damage blood vessels. The answer is straightforward: no. The picosecond laser is precisely tuned to be absorbed by tattoo pigment, not by haemoglobin in the blood. Blood vessels are not the target, and we work around them rather than through them.
The thin skin at the wrist has one advantage for removal: the laser has easier access to the pigment. At the same time, we calibrate treatment parameters more carefully here than on the thicker skin of the torso to avoid over-stimulation.
The wrist is closer to the heart than the fingers and palm, which means better circulation and more efficient lymphatic drainage — translating into faster clearance of shattered pigment by the body.
Outer vs inner wrist — the differences
The outer wrist (the top, dorsal side) is exposed to sunlight for most of the day. On one hand, UV exposure may cause natural fading of the pigment; on the other, strict sun protection is essential throughout the entire course of treatment to prevent post-treatment pigmentation changes.
The inner wrist (the palmar side) has thinner, more touch-sensitive skin. Treatment in this area can feel more intense, but the skin there heals cleanly and predictably. It is one of the areas where cosmetic results are typically very good.
How many sessions does wrist tattoo removal take
For standard tattoos (black or grey ink, average density) the wrist falls within the typical range of 8–12 sessions spaced around 8 weeks apart. Coloured or densely saturated tattoos may require additional sessions, just as they would in any other location.
Key factors affecting the session count include ink colour, density, depth of pigment deposit and the age of the tattoo — older tattoos generally clear more easily. You receive a personalised plan at the consultation after we look at the tattoo. More on the variables in the guide on how many sessions tattoo removal takes.

Aftercare for the wrist
The wrist is in constant motion — we flex it with almost every manual task. After treatment the skin is more sensitive than usual, so for a few days after each session it is worth limiting intense wrist movements and avoiding mechanical friction — tight watches, sports bands or exercises that heavily engage the wrists.
Sun protection is mandatory throughout the entire course of treatment, and the wrist — its outer side in particular — is hard to keep covered. Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen every day, even in winter and on overcast days. Full aftercare guidance is in the guide on tattoo removal aftercare.
