Police — since 2023, tattoos can be visible
After a regulation change in force from 19 January 2023, officers may display tattoos on duty — except on the head, neck and hands. In addition, a tattoo whose content or form could undermine the dignity of the uniform may be deemed unacceptable, and a superior can order it covered.
At the recruitment stage a tattoo is not grounds to reject a candidate. Since 2018, regulations stopped treating tattoos as self-harm and stopped routing tattooed candidates to psychiatric evaluation.
Military — since September 2024, visible arm tattoos are allowed
A regulation change in force from 1 September 2024 lets soldiers display tattoos on the upper arms and forearms in uniform — apart from content widely regarded as offensive.
What still disqualifies:
- tattoos on the face and the front of the neck — for professional service and in ceremonial units,
- extremist, vulgar or offensive content — triggers psychological and psychiatric consultation,
- scarification and similar modifications may not be visible in uniform.
When removal genuinely helps
Since arms and legs are now allowed, removing a tattoo "on principle" makes no sense. It does in specific situations:
- the tattoo is on the face, neck or hand — a zone that still excludes you or can be banned,
- the content could be deemed offensive or unacceptable,
- you're aiming for a ceremonial unit or a service with stricter requirements,
- you want certainty at the medical-board stage, without explaining the symbolism.
Sometimes, instead of full removal, it's enough to bring the tattoo to a state where it's no longer a problem. We'll assess that at the consultation.
Uniformed-service rules are amended from time to time, and individual formations (Border Guard, State Fire Service, SOP) have their own regulations. Always check the current requirements of the specific service — we only help with the tattoo itself.

How long it takes — start before recruitment
Tattoo removal is 8–12 sessions a few weeks apart, spread over many months (sometimes fewer — we'll assess at the consultation). If you're planning to apply, start early enough to be ready for the medical board. See also: tattoos and work.
