Sessions for PMU — quick answer
Full laser removal of permanent eyebrow makeup with a picosecond laser typically takes 3–4 sessions spaced 6–8 weeks apart. That is considerably fewer than tattoo removal, which often requires 8–12 sessions.
The exact number depends on several factors — described below. A precise estimate is only possible after assessing the pigment at a consultation, often after a test spot.
Why PMU is removed faster than a tattoo
Three main reasons why permanent makeup responds better to laser than conventional tattoo ink:
- Pigment sits shallower. Permanent makeup is implanted in the papillary layer of the dermis — shallower than tattoo ink. The laser reaches the pigment particles more easily and the body clears them more readily.
- PMU pigments are designed to fade. Unlike tattoo inks, which are formulated for permanence, PMU pigments often contain iron oxides and organic dyes that degrade by design. The laser accelerates this natural process.
- Smaller area. Brows, eyeliner or lip contour are small surfaces — the laser covers them quickly and precisely compared with larger tattoos.
What affects the number of sessions
Even though 3–4 sessions is the typical range, the specific number depends on:
- Pigment colour and type. Dark and black pigments absorb laser energy very well — they usually need fewer sessions. Light, warm (ginger, blond) and flesh-tone pigments absorb energy differently and may need more sessions or a combination of methods. With shifted-colour PMU (grey, blue), a visual pigment assessment is important — we explain this in detail in the article on botched permanent eyebrow makeup.
- Age of the PMU. Older permanent makeup has already partially faded — the body has removed some pigment on its own over the years. This usually means less work for the laser and fewer sessions.
- Depth of implantation. Pigment placed deeper (for example from excessive pressure during the procedure) requires more sessions than shallower pigment.
- Goal of the treatment. Full removal (complete clearance) needs more sessions than lightening before new permanent makeup — where 1–3 sessions are usually enough. We cover lightening in detail in lightening permanent eyebrow makeup.
What the schedule looks like in practice
Each session is separated by 6–8 weeks. This gap is necessary — the laser shatters pigment particles, but the immune system then needs weeks to clear them through the lymphatic system. An earlier next session doesn't speed up the result and may disrupt healing.
A typical schedule:
- Session 1 — assessment, test spot, first laser session.
- 6–8 weeks — body clears broken-down pigment.
- Session 2 — progress check, next session.
- 6–8 weeks.
- Session 3 — assessment, decision on whether another session is needed.
- Session 4 if required.
Total time: with 3–4 sessions, 6–12 months from the first treatment to the full result. There is no biological shortcut — the body needs time to clear each round of shattered pigment.
After each session we review progress together — and tell you plainly whether another session is needed. We don't assume a fixed maximum number of visits upfront.
“After two visits I removed almost all of my old, 10-year-old makeup. Before each session I filled in a health questionnaire.”
Full removal versus lightening only
Complete pigment clearance is not always the goal. If you're planning new permanent makeup on a cleaner base, 1–3 lightening sessions are often enough — just enough for the old colour to stop dominating so the new pigment can sit evenly.
This is a shorter, less expensive option and the optimal choice for many clients. Pricing details are in the price list, and further information in the guide on lightening eyebrow PMU.
