Does it work — yes
Yes. A picosecond laser shatters the ink into tiny particles that the body clears, and for most tattoos it allows significant lightening or full removal. We describe the mechanism in detail in a separate guide: how laser tattoo removal works.
Effectiveness, though, isn't a plain "yes or no". It's more a question of how many sessions are needed and how clean the final result is. Both of those depend mainly on the ink colour and the age of the tattoo.
Which colours respond best
The laser only acts on inks that absorb its light. Hence the differences between colours:
- Best: black and dark shades. They absorb the light most strongly, so they respond fastest and usually clear most cleanly.
- In between: some colours, such as dark blues and greens — they can respond well but need more patience.
- Hardest: light and warm colours, white and UV inks. They absorb light poorly, so they respond slowly and sometimes can't be removed completely.
That's why a solid black tattoo is often easier to remove than a small, colourful design that includes white.
The age of the tattoo matters
Older tattoos can be easier to remove than fresh ones. Over time the ink fades somewhat on its own and sits more shallowly, so the laser has less work to do. A fresh, vivid tattoo is densely packed and usually needs more sessions.
A fresh tattoo isn't treated straight away anyway — the skin has to heal fully first. We cover session counts and gaps separately: how many sessions and how long removal takes.
Harder cases
A few other factors affect the result too: the quality and depth of the ink (amateur tattoos are often shallower and easier than professional ones), the layered ink of cover-ups, scarring at the tattoo site, and skin type and colour. None of these rule removal out — they only change the number of sessions and the pace. Whether a tattoo can be removed in full is covered here: can a tattoo be fully removed.
“After just four sessions I can already see a major improvement. I'd recommend it to anyone considering tattoo removal.”
Realistic expectations
Effective tattoo removal is a process, not a single treatment. Realistically: most tattoos can be significantly lightened or removed, but it takes several sessions spread over time, and with difficult colours the final result may be lightening rather than perfectly clear skin.
We don't promise a result sight unseen. At a free consultation we assess the colour, age and depth of the tattoo, run a test and tell you plainly what to expect. We show examples in our gallery.
